Thank you to the entire Child Nutrition staff at Jefferson County Schools! Our cooks, cafeteria managers, and secretaries have continued to provide tasty, nutritious meals to students during unprecedented circumstances brought on by a global pandemic. Despite staffing shortages and supply chain issues, they served students more than 155,000 meals in October alone. They have not only continued to build good habits in our elementary school students with balanced meals for breakfast and lunch, but are also reducing food waste and helping middle and high school students make good choices by allowing them to make individual decisions on which menu items they choose, including the salad bar.

We would like to provide an update to our communication this morning regarding the report of a weapon on a WMS/JHS bus. As noted, law enforcement responded quickly, and a search of the bus confirmed that there were no weapons present. In an abundance of caution, law enforcement conducted further investigation. As a result, law enforcement confirmed that a student brought a BB gun to the bus stop and concealed the BB gun at the bus stop rather than taking it on the bus. At no point was there any weapon on the bus nor was any threat made. The student and their parents have been notified and appropriate disciplinary action is being taken. We understand and appreciate the high expectations that our community has for safety and communication. We continue to work closely with our outstanding law enforcement to meet those expectations and thank you for your support.

This morning a Wildwood Middle School student texted their parent stating that they had seen another student with a weapon on the bus. The parent immediately contacted the WMS administration. Law enforcement and transportation were notified, and the bus was diverted to another location and met by law enforcement. A thorough search verified that there were no weapons on board. The bus was released to resume its route and the students were safely delivered to school. The communication, teamwork, and trust between parents, school administration, and law enforcement resulted in this situation being dealt with swiftly and professionally. We thank our parents, staff and partners in law enforcement for working together to keep kids safe.

During the Month of October, Wildwood Middle School FFA members, and the 7th Grade Science Department paired to run a Haunted Courtyard event under the supervision of FFA Advisor, Ms. Poole and Science Teacher, Mr. Alexander (Mr. A). The idea started as a lesson in Mr. A's class covering stimuli and the nervous system. As an experienced Haunted House builder, he graciously offered his expertise to WMS students and helped create a fundraiser for the FFA Chapter. Students spent time weeding and pruning plants in the courtyard during the start of school. They eagerly planned "carnival game" activities for students and their families to take part in while they waited on night to fall for a trip through the screams of the Haunted Courtyard. Students stayed after school and came in early over the weekend to build and secure walls in the courtyard, audition, and practice "scare" roles, and organize games and decorations. This event has directed students back to critical thinking and problem-solving as they have collaborated to organize this event. The first night was a great success with over 120 guests! Some of our guests' favorite exhibits have been the "Touch a Tractor," and the "Haunted Chickens" brought in by WMS FFA members, and the sensory table made with corn Jefferson FFA built before their departure to the National FFA Convention. The event was open from 6:30 until 9:00 on October 23rd and 24th and will be open again to the public on the 30th with an additional Trunk-or-Treat event hosted by our staff and FFA parents. We hope to see you there!
